🤔 Start with the Idea

Finding an area from a map requires more than converting one length. Since area is two-dimensional, the scale conversion must affect both dimensions.

📖 Area from a Map

If 1 cm represents 50 m, then:

1 cm² represents 50 m × 50 m = 2 500 m²

This is the area factor for the map.

Do not say 1 cm² represents 50 m². The conversion factor must be squared.

🎮 Explore the Scale

Change the map or drawing length and the scale value. Notice how the real distance changes proportionally.

🧠 Let’s Think Together

A rectangular plot is 6 cm by 4 cm on a plan with scale 1 cm represents 20 m.

Real dimensions: 6 × 20 = 120 m and 4 × 20 = 80 m.

Area = 120 × 80 = 9 600 m²

Answer: 9 600 m².
