Enlargement = centre of enlargement + scale factor.

Finding the Centre

Join corresponding vertices and extend the lines. Their common intersection is the centre of enlargement.

An enlargement changes every distance from a fixed centre by the same multiplier called the scale factor. It may make a figure larger, smaller or place it on the opposite side of the centre.

Centre of enlargement

Object point, centre and image point lie on one straight ray.

Scale factor k

Image distance from centre = |k| ร— object distance.

Negative or fractional k

A fraction shrinks. A negative factor places the image on the opposite side and reverses direction through the centre.
