Similarity

Similar shapes have the same shape but may have different sizes. Corresponding lengths are in the same ratio.

Key idea: If the linear scale factor is k, then the area scale factor is k² and the volume scale factor is k³.
Length factor = k
Area factor = k²
Volume factor = k³

Every corresponding length changes by the same factor.

Worked Example: Lengths

Two similar shapes have scale factor 3. A side on the smaller shape is 7 cm.

Corresponding larger side = 7×3 = 21 cm.

Worked Example: Areas

Linear scale factor is 4. Smaller area is 18 cm².

Area factor = 4²=16, so larger area = 18×16=288 cm².

Worked Example: Volumes

Linear scale factor is 2.5. Smaller volume is 32 cm³.

Volume factor=2.5³=15.625, so larger volume=500 cm³.

Scale Drawings

A scale such as 1:50 means 1 unit on the drawing represents 50 of the same units in reality.

A wall measures 8 cm on a 1:50 plan.

Real length=8×50=400 cm=4 m.
