How Do Coordinates Work?

(x, y) = (sideways movement, vertical movement)
Key idea: Move along the x-axis first, then move parallel to the y-axis.

Worked Example 1: Plotting a Point

Plot P(โˆ’3, 4).

Begin at the origin.

The x-coordinate is โˆ’3, so move 3 units left.

The y-coordinate is 4, so move 4 units up.

Points on the Axes

A point lies on the x-axis when its y-coordinate is zero. A point lies on the y-axis when its x-coordinate is zero.

A(6, 0) lies on the x-axis ย ย  B(0, โˆ’4) lies on the y-axis
A zero coordinate does not mean the point is the origin. Both coordinates must be zero for the point to be the origin.

โš ๏ธ Common Mistake: Reversing Coordinates

Plotting (2, 5) as though it were (5, 2) places the point in the wrong position. Read the first number across and the second number up or down.
