Similarity

Similar figures have the same shape but may have different sizes. Corresponding angles are equal and corresponding sides are proportional.

Scale factor = corresponding image length ÷ original length

Congruence

Congruent figures have exactly the same shape and size.

SSS

Three corresponding sides equal.

SAS

Two sides and included angle equal.

ASA

Two angles and included side equal.

RHS

Right angle, hypotenuse and one side equal.

Worked Example

Two similar triangles have corresponding sides 6 cm and 15 cm. Scale factor=15÷6=2.5. A corresponding side of 8 cm becomes 20 cm.
